This Year’s Y NAIDOC Week T-shirt
June 17 2025 – Earl McMillan

This year’s Y NAIDOC Week T-shirt design, created by Stephen Landers, is a powerful tribute to the 2025 theme: “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.” Through bold colours and flowing digital patterns, Stephen brings to life a story of identity, connection, and community - one deeply rooted in his own journey.
Stephen has worked in Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) for more than a decade and joined the Y just over a year ago. A proud father of three, he grew up on Darug Country in Mt Druitt, a culturally rich and diverse community with a strong Aboriginal presence. “That’s where I first learned the meaning of family,” he shares, “not just through blood, but through community. Kids moved freely between homes, doors were left unlocked, and everyone looked out for one another.”
He later moved to Biripi Country in Taree, where that sense of belonging continued. Time spent on the mission and learning from Elders left a lasting impression - shaping his understanding of leadership, care, and cultural strength. Now based in Queensland, Stephen brings that same community-first mindset to his work supporting children. “Helping children grow, feel seen, and find their place in the world is what drives me every day.”
The inspiration for his artwork is drawn from these lived experiences - growing up surrounded by strong cultural symbols, deep storytelling traditions, and a collective understanding of family that transcended biology.
Digitally created using vibrant lines and symbolic imagery, the artwork features two kangaroos - one older, one younger - standing beneath a radiant sun and the Y’s iconic symbol. Flowing around them are patterns representing storylines, rivers of knowledge, and the dynamic journey forward. The kangaroos face each other in exchange: the elder passes down strength and wisdom; the younger carries forward hope and vision.
Between them, the words “Next Generation” serve as a direct nod to this year’s NAIDOC theme - but also to something greater. They reflect the Y’s mission to honour those who came before while empowering young people to shape the future with courage, clarity, and connection.
“The piece reflects the spirit of togetherness,” Stephen says. “The vibrant connections we form as educators, and the importance of creating a space where every child feels safe, included, and supported.”
At the Y, we believe intergenerational leadership matters. Stephen’s design captures that belief - the ripple effect of guidance, care, and storytelling passed down through time.
Just as Stephen now uses digital tools to carry culture forward, the Y continues to amplify young voices and nurture changemakers through platforms like WhyNot.
More than just a T-shirt, this design is a reminder of the strength we carry forward through stories, culture and connection.
Legacy leads. The next generation follows - and then forges ahead.
