About the Artist:
My name is Stephen, and I’ve been with the Y for just over a year, but I’ve worked in OSHC for more than 10 years. I’m 32 years old and a proud father of three. I grew up in Mt Druitt, a culturally rich and diverse community with a strong Aboriginal presence. That’s where I first learned the meaning of family, not just through blood but through community. It was common to see kids walking freely between homes, doors unlocked, and everyone looking out for one another.
Later, I moved to Taree and experienced a similar sense of belonging. I had the privilege of spending time on the mission area and learning from Elders and lessons that have stayed with me throughout my life. Eventually, I moved to Queensland, completed high school, and discovered my passion for supporting others. While I began my journey in youth work, I quickly fell in love with the OSHC space. Helping children grow, feel seen, and find their place in the world is what drives me every day.
About the Artwork:
The inspiration for my artwork stems from the deep sense of community and connection I’ve experienced throughout my life. Growing up in Aboriginal-populated areas like Mt Druitt and Taree, I was surrounded by powerful stories, symbols, and a collective understanding of family that extended far beyond bloodlines. This piece reflects the spirit of togetherness, the vibrant connections we form as educators, and the importance of creating a space where every child feels safe, included, and supported.
