About the Artwork:
This year’s NAIDOC T-shirt design competition theme is 50 Years Deadly.
For me, this theme is about honouring the strength, resilience and resistance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, and recognising the cultural leadership they continue to provide for our communities. It celebrates the wisdom they have carried, protected and passed down, and acknowledges the important role they play in guiding future generations.
This piece reflects the past, present and future. It speaks to the stories, knowledge and traditions that have been carried for generations, and to the journey that continues today. It is a reminder that we walk forward with the strength of those who came before us, while also creating space for the voices of today and tomorrow.
The hands in this artwork represent connection. They are a symbol of care, creativity, culture and community, reminding us of the many ways knowledge is held, shared and carried across generations. They speak to our connection to Country, to each other and to the stories that continue to shape us.
This design also represents that now is the time for our journey and our voices to be heard. It speaks to the importance of creating our own stories while being grounded in the cultural guidance of our Elders and leaders. Their leadership lights the way, giving us the strength and confidence to continue shaping the future.
The artwork also reflects the deep knowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples hold in relation to land, sky and community. We were among the first peoples to understand astronomy, using the stars to guide knowledge, story and connection. Fire is also an important symbol within this piece, representing warmth, gathering and cultural discussion, and the spaces where communities come together to share, learn and connect.
At its heart, this design is about legacy, strength and continuity. It honours the past, celebrates the present and looks to the future, reminding us that culture is alive, our voices matter, and our stories will continue to be carried forward.
