Artist statement

THEY DESERVE YOUR FLOWERS

As a young person, it can be difficult to see the way we are characterised by our institutions, politicians, the media and wider society.

Young people are often described as loud, disruptive, angry or violent. Yet young people are also the ones risking their safety to protest injustice, speaking out when it would be easier to remain silent, volunteering their time and representing their communities without expecting recognition in return.

Through my own experience with the Y's Youth Parliament program, both as a participant and as a member of the taskforce, I have seen a very different picture of young people.

I have met some of the most inspiring, thoughtful and hardworking people through this program. They have shown courage, perseverance and determination, not only in the way they advocate for change, but in the way they support one another and continue showing up for their communities.

This artwork is my attempt to reflect how I see them: as beautiful, powerful and deserving of recognition.

Flowers are often given to celebrate someone, honour their contribution or show them that they are appreciated. Too often, young people are expected to keep giving their time, energy and ideas without receiving that recognition in return.

For everything young people contribute, challenge and create, they deserve to be celebrated too.

They deserve your flowers.
