Behind the Seams: The Story Behind the 2026 NAIDOC Week Tee
August 18 2026 – YMCA Gear
Every year, we partner with WhyNot to launch a NAIDOC Week T-Shirt Competition to give young First Nations artists the opportunity to share their stories through design. It's more than creating a t-shirt. It's a platform for creativity, culture and connection.
This year's winning design was created by Paige (16, WA) and celebrates the 2026 NAIDOC Week theme, "50 Years Deadly."

Through her artwork, Paige honours the strength, resilience and cultural leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, while recognising the stories, knowledge and traditions that continue to shape future generations.
Every element of the design has meaning. The hands woven throughout the artwork represent the passing of knowledge, creativity and care between generations. Fire symbolises strength and connection, while the stars acknowledge the deep cultural knowledge that continues to guide communities across Country.
Capturing the detail and vibrancy of First Nations artwork is an important part of the production process. We selected a direct-to-garment print to achieve a soft feel and worked through multiple samples to ensure the final colours stayed true to Paige's original design.
We’re proud to have produced this tee alongside WhyNot and loved seeing the tees being worn by our Y community.
